Chairman's letter for January

A Happy New Year to every one, and as we are now in a new decade and our 90th Birthday Year, a very exciting and enjoyable year lies ahead for us. Before I start on current news, may I firstly thank all WIs who included me in their celebrations, whether it was a Birthday / Christmas Party, or Carol Service. The enthusiasm and friendship extended by fellow members is over whelming. It banishes any weariness and sends me home full of joy and ready to face the future. I would also like to extend my thanks to all who took part in the Cathedral Carol Service. What a wonderful day is was! Our County Musical Director Mrs Joyce Kirkpatrick is to be congratulated. The County Choir grows in confidence and this was reflected in the wonderful singing of three Anthems. Joyce informs me she is already working on music for out 90th Birthday Service, to be held on Wednesday 10th November. Make a note of this date as it will be a service of celebration and one not to be missed. We are also privileged to be holding a Garden Party at Cholmondeley Castle on the 18th May, by kind invitation of Lavinia, Marchioness of Cholmondeley. These are just a selection of what we have planned for 2010 a year of Celebration!

The County Quiz preliminary rounds are held this month and to those taking part, the best of luck. To Valerie Gough and Jill Beavan, who have set the questions, thank you, not an easy job but always well done. Final details for the Annual Council Meeting are now arranged. The morning speaker is our new Chief Constable Mr David Whatton, followed in the afternoon by our National Federation Chairman Ruth Bond. Ruth recently attended the Copenhagen Conference, and I am sure she will delight us with her experiences and quiet charm.

This time last year we were looking forward to hearing Anne Mustoe speak. Sadly Anne fell ill in Aleppo, Syria and on November 10th 2009 died in hospital. She was part way round her third circumnavigation of the world, on her trusty bike. I would like to think she died happy, doing what she loved. Our deepest sympathy goes to her family.

Chairman’s Challenge: To all those who took up my challenge I am most grateful- thank you. After a very slow start, we have now received more than sufficient to print a booklet. We hope this will be on sale at the Annual Council Meeting, at Winsford. Are you, or do you know a WI member who will be celebrating their 90th Birthday in 2010? If so, please could you send details to WI House stating name and WI. Thank you.
