Women and Climate Change

In recent years, the WI has been involved in various, meaningful projects, which have aimed to engage members with current sustainability issues - with a focus on food, the home and transport.
The Love Food Champions Project is helping individuals to reduce their food waste by sharing knowledge and experience.
The Great Milk Debate highlighted the plight of Dairy Farmers in the County.
The WI is a founding member of the Fairtrade Foundation and our members seek to increase awareness of the FAIRTRADE Mark.
WI EcoTeams have learned how their daily actions affect climate change and how to make simple yet effective changes to their lifestyles to reduce their impact on the planet. Topics studied included water, waste, energy, transport and shopping.
A successful campaign was waged against excess packaging and recycling is encouraged.

The WI Carbon Challenge in 2007 encouraged all WI members and the wider public too - to evaluate and reduce their carbon footprint by 20%. Concern over the threat of climate change impacts has seen local Cheshire women campaigning on a wide range of environmental issues for immediate action - to protect future generations.

On a global dimension, the Cheshire WI Federation has been disseminating information on the effects of climate change on the Third World poorer countries through its interesting 'Women reaching Women' Project. A recent full day event highlighted the problems of the lack of safe, clean water. Click here to read more about WRW.
